Lava Lake Viewing Quality Guide and Visiting Tips

Today’s Lake Lava Level

Intra-day Inflation & Deflation

Today’s lava lake level is measured and posted each morning typically before 11am HST. Often the lake level in in the evening is similar to the measurement in the morning, however typically the lava lake will continue it’s inflation or deflation during the day. So an inflating lake level of -50ft could improve to -40ft by evening, and likewise a deflating lake level of -50ft could drop further to -70ft or more by the evening. Check the 30day trend graph to see if the lake trend is currently inflating or deflating. Note that when the lake hits an inflation peak or deflation low point, it will rebound the other direction, sometimes quite rapidly. The main thing to keep in mind is that the lava lake will continue it’s current rise or fall throughout the day, so keep this in mind when trying to predict evening viewing conditions. The live cam photos of the lava lake at the bottom of this page will serve as an up-to-the-minute view of lava lake at any given time. It’s not a bad idea to check the cams to see the current level and viewing condition prior to heading to the park.
